Message the cop's radar sends out a beam that floods the area in front of him, it does not single out anything. It turns on and tells him the speed of the fastest moving object in the direction it is facing. Then it is up to him to visually determine which car is moving at that rate of speed. So if a cop is sitting there with his radar on he is basically watching the speed and trying to pick out cars (very hard). Which is great for you and your detector since you can pick him up far before he can ever hope to judge visually if you are the car corresponding to his indicator.

Speed traps though are much better, he can sit and wait (around a corner, just on the other side of a hill crest, and flip on his radar as a car comes his way and he knows right then how fast you are going. They do this alot in the eastern states I noticed cause by sitting just beyond the crest of a hill they can be certain it is you who is speeding as you come over the hill, radar is subject to line-of-sight so even if some guy 1000ft behind you is doing 20mph faster than you, he is below the radar beam (which are relatively wide, if I had to guess I'd say anywhere from 45 to 90 degrees, depending on how expensive the equipment) so the cop wont have a clue and wont care since he already busted you.

So what does this all mean to you?
Basically if you drive right into a trap and the cop doesnt turn on his radar until after he visually singles you out, V1 isnt going to help you at all. But if you are on flat terrrain where your car is still in line-of-sight of the speed trap even from large distances, then your detector will tip you off as the cop flips it onto cars well ahead of you, giving you a chance to slam on your brakes and make the nose dive right in front of him, lol. V1 is highly touted as having excellent range and sensitivity and of course the arrows, which are very important since cop radar uses doppler shift to compute speed. Many states only use radar systems that read compression (moving towards the cop) and not expansion (moving away from the cop). So if you were totally up on your states radar systems, then I guess you could ignore all radar that didnt come from the front. ANYWAY......

So the guy kind of was right, in some instances your detector will not do a thing for you, but it can absolutely save your ass.
You dont need one though if you hawkeye the interstate like I do, you can see the cop the same time he can see you, so if you are far enough away there is no way he can possibly tell if you are moving the speed on his gun.

LIDAR, yes you are always screwed. Lidar detectors are a waste of money, buy or make a jammer, only way around them.
